The West's biggest defeat, – political scientist on NATO's indecisiveness regarding Ukraine Anzhelika Galesevich

V The NATO summit has started in Washington. In the draft joint communiqué of the member countries, Ukraine’s path to joining the Alliance is called “irreversible”.

However, as political scientist, partner of the communication agency Good Politics Maxim Dzhigun, during the event this issue will not be raised at all.

What is the biggest defeat committed West

“The issue of Ukraine's accession to NATO will not be a topic of negotiations in Washington at all. This is the biggest defeat not for Ukraine, but for the West, which is losing the chance to bring Ukraine closer for the second time to the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Moreover, not only on the terms of Ukraine, but also of the civilized and consolidated world,” the political scientist noted.

Things like “Ukraine is happening, a springboard, a hang glider for joining NATO” are definitely not among our strategic priorities. According to Dzhigun, it is already clear that after the end of the war, the member countries will want to see Ukraine as part of their institution. Since our state is a unique bearer of experience, knowledge and skills in introducing modern military operations, which were not practiced at least on the European and North American continents in the 11th century.

Therefore Ukraine will leave the summit without a political signal about joining NATO. No one questions the peacekeeping initiatives of the United States and Germany, but it is these countries that are an obstacle to giving Kyiv the green light. Accordingly, this is their defeat. Since by inviting Ukraine into the Alliance, they would not have crossed any of Vladimir Putin's imaginary “red lines”, they would not have done any practical things, but from a symbolic point of view it would be a wonderful development of bilateral relations between NATO and the Ukrainian state.

Therefore, here now we cannot express joy or love for our partners. However, Ukraine expects to receive practical things in the form of additional air defense systems, in the form of assurances that even in the format of a change of American power and the head of the Oval Office, Ukraine will remain on the Alliance’s agenda and will receive the necessary assistance, noted Maxim Dzhigun.< /p>

Recall that Joe Biden at the opening of the NATO summit in Washington announced that the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy will provide Ukraine with five additional strategic air defense systems, and in the coming months the United States will provide Ukraine dozens of additional tactical air defense systems.

It is worth noting, however: 4 of the 5 “new” systems announced by Biden were already known, and one of them, the German one, has already been delivered on duty of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
