On December 8, the United States vetoed the UN resolution. It called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip amid growing concerns about the number of civilian casualties.

Please note that the resolution was supported 13 countries. The United States vetoed, and Great Britain abstained from voting.

What was said in the resolution

Let's start with the fact that the United Arab Emirates presented it. The resolution called for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” as well as “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages” and “ensuring humanitarian access.”

At least 97 other countries have joined the bill drafted by the UAE. They became its co-authors.

Note that the United States previously stated that it did not approve of the draft text. They are one of the five permanent members of the Council with veto power. Consequently, the United States has repeatedly opposed calls for a “ceasefire”. They note that Israel has the right to defend itself following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack.

We would like to add that language about hostages held by Palestinian militants in Gaza was added to the draft resolution. This was done in the hope of appealing to the United States.

This is the sixth attempt by the 15-member group to reach consensus on the war between Israel and Hamas. Note that only the previous vote last month was successful. It called for “humanitarian pauses and corridors” in the Gaza Strip.

We should add that the vote is on Friday December 8 took place after the appeal of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Article 99 of the UN Charter. It allows him to convene a meeting of the Security Council on “an issue that may increase existing threats to the maintenance of international peace and security.”

< p>Interestingly, a suitable tool has not been used since 1989.

It became known a few days ago that Israel has entered the southern Gaza Strip. The IDF named the purpose of the operation. One of its tasks is to identify places where militants are holding Israeli hostages.

According to IDF fighters, they managed to take control of the tunnels in which Hamas commanders are located. Also, the Israeli army is engaged in the destruction of the underground infrastructure of Palestinian terrorists throughout the Gaza Strip.
