The US Supreme Court allowed Trump to run: does Haley now have a chance to win?

In 15 American states on Tuesday, March 5, primaries will be held – internal party elections for a presidential candidate. Super Tuesday is one of the most important days of the election campaign in the United States.

The results of the “primaries” will put an end to the battle between Nikki Haley and Donald Trump. Political scientist, vice-rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University Dmitry Sherengovsky told Channel more about this.

Why Trump was allowed to run

All projections show Haley losing to Trump in every one of these states. The only factor that could slow down the entire process was the court's decision. However, the US Supreme Court on March 4 overturned the state of Colorado's decision to ban Trump from participating in the election race. Former US President may run again.

Colorado is one of three states where Trump was declared ineligible to run for a second term. He is accused of inciting the overthrow of the regime. Now lawyers are challenging all these decisions.

The fact that the US Supreme Court would reinstate Trump's participation in the Colorado primaries was an expected decision. Many pundits and constitutionalists have argued that we will have a situation where the court will not take on the responsibility of choosing what voters should do, the political scientist said.

Colorado Supreme Court made the decision against the background of the 14th amendment to the constitution, according to which persons involved in the rebellion are prohibited from holding public office. However, Trump's case was an exception.

Given that in American history there have been few individuals charged with inciting the overthrow of the regime, this is a big precedent,” noted Sherengovsky.

Most likely, such arguments will be used not only in the case of Colorado, but also in any other states that accused Trump of attempting to overthrow the regime when he was president of the United States.

“This gives carte blanche to his lawyers to unblock all such decisions and Trump will have a golden ticket because all the polls show that he will win the Republican nomination. There is not a single person who can stop him.” – added the political scientist.

What will Haley do

It’s quite possible that after Super Tuesday, Nicky Haley will withdraw her candidacy, despite promises that she will fight to the end. Most likely, the results will be by a wide margin, because even in the most liberal states the gaps are more than a third, and in some – more than 80% are predicted.

“It’s simply not It would make sense and logic to spend money on a campaign that will lead nowhere. A huge number of Republican Party members also see Trump as the new boss,” says Sherengovsky.
