The US State Department said that at the NATO summit in Washington, Ukraine will be offered specific ways regarding Ukraine's membership. We are talking about steps that will accelerate Kyiv’s entry into the Alliance.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Douglas Jones said that specific the wording is still being agreed upon. However, the document will confirm that Ukraine will become a member of NATO.

What the US State Department is saying

Douglas Jones said what the North Atlantic Alliance will discuss at the summit in Washington:

  • how to help Ukraine defend itself from Russian aggression now,
  • how to contain Russia in the future,
  • how to prepare for membership in NATO.

The United States and all NATO allies said that the future of Ukraine is in NATO. At this summit, we will unpack specific ways NATO can help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression, build the future power needed to deter Russia, and implement necessary reforms to make itself a stronger candidate for NATO membership,” the official said.

According to him, they call it a “bridge to membership” in NATO. At the same time, the support that is going to be provided at the summit will really help speed up Ukraine's path to NATO membership.

The US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs clarified that the wording of the declaration is still being negotiated among the Alliance allies. However, the Alliance has already announced that Ukraine will become a member of NATO.

By the way, the foreign ministers of 35 partner countries that are not members of the Alliance were also invited to the summit. In particular, it refers to the foreign ministers of Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

This is also the third summit, which will include not only the heads of state of all 32 NATO member countries, but also the leaders of the Indo-Pacific partner countries: Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. Douglas Jones clarified that developing the resilience of these allies to counter threats and challenges from China is one of the key items on the agenda.
