US Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune hopes that the upper house of Congress will pass a bill to impose tough sanctions against Russia before the August recess.
The bill on sanctions against Russia must be adopted by August
John Thune expressed hope that the bill on sanctions against Russia will be put to a vote before the August holidays.
“I hope we can bring it to a vote before the August recess. We are working with the administration, with the House of Representatives, to try to bring it (to a vote, – Ed. ) in the version when it is ready,” he said, writes The Hill.

He also stressed that there is “tremendous bipartisan support” for the bill in the Senate.
“I think it is shared in the House of Representatives as well… The White House is very interested in preparing it (the bill, – Ed. ) to pass it through the Senate. Whether this will happen in the next few weeks is an open question, but I hope that it can happen,” the Republican majority leader added.
According to the bill, which Republican Lindsey Graham introduced together with Democrat Richard Blumenthal, it is proposed to introduce sanctions against the Russian Federation and secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products. The document prescribes the introduction of a 500% duty on goods from any country that buys Russian products under sanctions.
Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that he was ready to consider the bill.
“I don't know the details yet, but I know there is interest in this in the House of Representatives, so we'll see. Putin has shown an unwillingness to be reasonable and talk seriously about a peaceful settlement, and I think we need to send him a signal,” he said.
Let us recall that earlier the media wrote that US President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to sign a bill on tough economic restrictions against Russia, but he wants to monitor their implementation.
