The US has allowed Ukraine to use ATACMS: how the world is reacting Sofia Khushvakhtova

US President Joe Biden has granted Ukraine permission to use ATACMS for strikes on Russian territory. Canada, Italy and the EU shared their thoughts.

Ukraine has been given the ability to strike Russian territory with ATACMS missiles, sparking a wave of discussions among allies. This was reported by 24 Kanal, citing CBC, Rai News and a press conference at the EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Brussels.

How other countries have responded to the US's permission to strike Russia for Ukraine

Canada openly supported this decision, stating the need to help Ukraine in its fight against aggression. Defense Minister Bill Blair noted that Ottawa's position has always been to support the use of long-range weapons that allies provide to Kyiv. According to him, Canada does not impose any restrictions on the use of the transferred weapons.

Italy, in turn, takes a cautious position. Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said that they will not change their strategy, which is aimed at supporting Ukraine by providing air defense. She also recognized the right of other states to choose their own approach, but stressed that Italy will act in accordance with its own priorities.

The representative of the European Union Josep Borrell also spoke on this matter, noting that the US decision is justified and complies with international law. He noted that such strikes should be limited in scale and not lead to a significant escalation.

This is what the Ukrainians have been asking for for a long time. And I particularly supported this request because I think that, firstly, it complies with international law, and because the Ukrainians should be able to respond to Russian attacks, even if they come from Russian territory, Borrell emphasized.

But the Kremlin reacted sharply to the US permission to use ATACMS missiles on Russian territory, calling it a step that increases tension in the conflict. Peskov said that this decision is a deliberate attempt to fuel tensions, adding “fuel to the fire.”
