The US Air Force has signed a $13 billion contract with Sierra Nevada Corp. They plan to develop a successor to the E-4B, better known as the “Doomsday” aircraft.

The Resvivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) project aims to replacing aging aircraft that entered service in the 1970s and are nearing the end of their service life. Work on it will be carried out in the states of Colorado, Nevada and Ohio.

Currently, the function of the Doomsday aircraft is taken over by the E-4B. The US Air Force currently operates four E-4B aircraft, one of which is permanently operational. It is known that these aircraft are based on the Boeing 747-200 airliner, and were built in the 1970s.
