US President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan, during a briefing at the White House, acknowledged the ineffectiveness of US sanctions against other countries, agreeing that they do not always achieve all the goals. It is reported by Interfax.
“I will not argue that sanctions are a panacea,” Sullivan said, responding to a journalist who gave a series of examples of ineffective US sanctions. He recalled Iran, which, under the influence of sanctions, agreed to conclude agreements on its nuclear program. Sullivan also pointed out that there were cases where the sanctions “did not allow to achieve all the goals.”
Earlier, Sullivan said that sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation in Ukraine are part of the available toolkit. According to him, Washington has other leverage. He also added that the goal of the United States and its allies is not to “get involved in an escalation spiral, but to find a way out” that is consistent with their principles and interests.
