The third power unit of the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was re-decommissioned — they want to finish it and finally put it into operation.

The power unit was started to be built 40 years ago and later the work was stopped due to a moratorium. Now they are trying to revive the project, because the unit is 80% ready.

Exactly 20 years ago, the second unit of the Khmelnitsky NPP started operating. Recently, after the early completion of repairs to one of the power units of the Khmelnitsky NPP, the rolling blackouts stopped. And now we must direct our efforts to developing the industry in order to resist the enemy who wants to destroy our power system.
As soon as the Verkhovna Rada passes the corresponding law, the Khmelnitsky station will begin construction of the third block, and eventually the fourth.
— These are repair and restoration work. We restore the condition of structures and elements. Unfortunately, over time, the conservation of construction work has reached a certain state, but they can and should be restored,” said the director of the Khmelnytsky NPP Andrey Kozyura.
Preparatory work at the Khmelnytsky NPP is carried out on its own — Almost 600 power engineers from the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant work there, who managed to evacuate.
The third unit of the Khmelnitsky NPP is 80% ready and its capacity will be enough to provide energy for almost the entire capital. Some of the equipment is available, and the rest is planned to be purchased in Bulgaria.
— It will provide 1 gigawatt of additional capacity. These increasingly large capacity restrictions that we suffered from 10 weeks ago ended with the removal of one such power unit from repair. If it is completed, then we will be here in terms of balance and capacity that the energy system needs, – noted Petr Kotin, acting Chairman of the Board of the Joint-Stock Company National Atomic Energy Generating Company Energoatom.
The Importance of Completing the Construction of the Khmelnitsky NPP
The construction of the second unit of the Khmelnitsky NPP was also frozen at one time due to the moratorium, but the work was completed in accordance with all safety requirements. This was a very important event in the energy sector.
— If there had not been this million-strong plant, there would have been a schedule of shutdowns. And if the third had been — it would be even better, – emphasized the former employee of the power unit No. 2 of the Khmelnitsky NPP Sergey Tsukruk.
After one of the power units of the Khmelnitsky NPP was taken out of repair, the power outages stopped. Nuclear power plants generate clean energy. And this is an example of the fact that nuclear energy must be developed.
— If we had even more units in the system, it would be easier for us to go through this terror, which, unfortunately, does not stop today. We need to do this. The main thing here is not to waste time, because these are projects for more than one year or even two, — noted Energy Minister German Galushchenko.
Most Ukrainians are already preparing for winter. But not a single expert can say what the next cold season will be like against the backdrop of constant cynical shelling of Russians.
