The UN Security Council condemned the holding of so-called Russian presidential elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The Security Council meeting was convened at the request of Ukraine, which had previously addressed Slovenia. Since January, Slovenia has become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from Eastern Europe.

— Any annexation of the territory of one State by another as a result of the threat or use of force constitutes a violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary for Political Affairs, said at the beginning of the meeting.

This is exactly what the Russian Federation has been trying to do in Ukraine since the annexation of Crimea and holding a so-called referendum there, she recalled.

In this context, the Secretary General condemned Moscow’s intention to organize presidential elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine from March 15 to 17.

How the “elections are going” in the occupied territories

According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, the so-called referendums and local elections took place in a forced environment. And according to international humanitarian law, the occupying power is obliged to respect the laws of Ukraine.
