UN Secretary General António Guterres, at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, proposed the creation of a contact group in the UN-Russia-Ukraine format.

During a press conference, he stressed the need for humanitarian corridors that would be safe, effective for the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of aid, Russian media reported, Channel 24 reports.

I proposed the creation of a contact group on humanitarian issues that would bring the UN, Russia and Ukraine together to find opportunities, open safe corridors to ensure that these corridors are effective,” Guterres said.

The Secretary General also said that the UN is ready to direct all efforts to save the lives of people in Mariupol.

“I propose to coordinate the work of the UN, the International Red Cross, Ukraine and Russia in order to guarantee the safe evacuation of civilians wishing to leave, both at the Azovstal plant and in the city, in any direction that they will elect,” said the Secretary General.

After the meeting with Lavrov, Guterres is to meet with Putin. On April 28, he will visit Ukraine and hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in Ukraine.
