The UK will “redouble its efforts” to support Ukraine: Starmer made a loud statement

The British Prime Minister noted that Russian aggression "is unforgivable and cannot go unpunished".

New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday, July 19, at a government meeting with the participation of President Vladimir Zelensky, said he would “double down” support for Ukraine, and confirmed that he had accepted an invitation to visit Kyiv this morning.

The Guardian writes about this.

Keir Starmer said that Vladimir Zelensky's visit to Downing Street was a “real historical event.” The publication notes that the Ukrainian president became the first foreign leader in 27 years to personally attend a meeting of the British Cabinet of Ministers.

The British Prime Minister added that Ukraine enjoys the “unwavering support” of Great Britain, and Russian aggression is “unforgivable and cannot go unpunished.”

In response, Vladimir Zelensky asked Keir Starmer to “demonstrate his leadership” and allow Ukraine to use British weapons to strike Russian territory. Zelensky said the ability to use Western weapons to strike deep into Russian territory is important to Ukraine's efforts to defend against Russian aggression.

The British government neither confirmed nor denied the lifting of restrictions on the use of Storm Shadow missiles against targets in Russia.

“Our position has not changed, and the Prime Minister set it out yesterday. We are providing military assistance to support Ukraine's undoubted right to self-defence against Russia's unlawful actions, in accordance with international humanitarian law. The weapons provided by the UK are intended to defense of Ukraine,” a British government representative told reporters.

Recall that the British Ministry of Defense does not rule out that they may support the requests of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to use Storm Shadow missiles for attacks on Russian territory. At the same time, Defense Minister John Gealey stressed that the British army will not participate in hostilities in Ukraine.
