The CSTO at its meeting decided not to help Armenia with troops. At the same time, the countries proposed to create a working group.

The relevant information was reported by the Russian media. Before that, the Prime Minister of Armenia had already called on the way.

The CSTO countries decided how to “help” Armenia

At the meeting, the Collective Security Treaty Organization proposed to Armenia:

  • to send the organization's Secretary General Stanislav Zas to the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is preliminary known that this was a proposal from Belarus;
  • and also to create a working group to analyze the situation.

The participants of the meeting spoke “in favor of its settlement exclusively by political and diplomatic means on the basis of the generally recognized principles of international law and agreements enshrined in the tripartite statements of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia dated November 9, 2020,” the CSTO decided.

Also Russian media wrote that Putin took part in an extraordinary session of the CSTO Collective Security Council and allegedly announced “additional practical steps by the Russian side aimed at de-escalating the tension” between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The CSTO may consider “de-escalation initiatives in the region”

In addition, the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council is to be held in Yerevan in autumn, the leaders will be presented with de-escalation initiatives in the region.

It should be recalled that Armenia asked for help from Russia and the CSTO due to the aggravation of the situation with Azerbaijan. At the same time, Vladimir Putin, in a conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikolai Pashin, recommended “be patient and stay in touch.”

The aggravation of the situation between Azerbaijan and Armenia

It is worth remembering that on the night of 13 September between Azerbaijan and Armenia the situation escalated . In particular, the countries reported provocations and shelling.

The situation again concerned Nagorno-Karabakh. From there, after the defeat in the second war, the Armenians were forced to begin the process of evacuating the unrecognized enclave according to the agreements of November 10, 2020.

However, in July 2022, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev accused Russia of sabotaging peace agreements and encouraging the Armenian army to stay in Nagorno-Karabakh.
