The European Union, at the initiative of France and in coordination with American senators, is preparing a new package of the toughest sanctions against Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This was stated by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in a commentary to the French television channel TF1.

The French Foreign Minister noted that after US President Donald Trump's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine supported, the number of Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities increased fivefold.

“This cannot go on any longer, it must stop. To achieve this, in coordination with American senators, Europe is preparing to introduce, on the basis of the French proposals, the most stringent sanctions we have introduced in the last three years,” Barrot said.
According to the French minister, the new package will cover not only the energy sector, in particular revenues from oil exports, but also financial structures in Russia itself and beyond.
The sanctions will affect legal entities and individuals who help the Kremlin circumvent the imposed restrictions.
Barro explained that it is precisely thanks to these schemes that Putin retains the ability to wage war despite international pressure.
In addition, the French diplomat stressed that Russia is now focusing on terrorizing civilians rather than fighting.
“Putin is no longer advancing on the front and is now limiting himself to shelling residential areas with drones and missiles. This is resulting in numerous casualties. This must stop,” Barro emphasized.
Earlier, the EU extended sectoral sanctions against Russia for another six months. They include restrictions in the financial, energy, defense and technological spheres.
