The European Union condemned Russia's holding of pseudo-elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. They assured that the EU strongly condemns the holding of these illegitimate so-called elections.

EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on September 11 that they condemn Russia's futile new attempt to legitimize or normalize its illegal military control, as well as its attempt to annex parts of Ukrainian territories.

The EU condemned the quasi-elections of Russians in the occupied territories

The European Union stated that Russia, during September 8-10, in addition to elections on its territory, held pseudo-elections in the territory of occupied Crimea and the occupied parts of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine.

The European Union does not and will not recognize either the holding of these so-called elections or their results. The political leadership of Russia and those involved in their organization will be held accountable for these illegal actions, Borrell assured.

According to him, the Russian invaders held these quasi-elections in Ukraine under the following conditions:

  • forced and illegal issuance of passports by Russia, including to children;
  • forced displacement and deportation;
  • massive and systematic violations of human rights;
  • intimidation and increased repression against Ukrainian citizens by Russia and under the illegitimately appointed “authority” in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The EU also assured that they appreciate the courage of the Ukrainians who opposed the fictitious vote and continue to oppose the Russian occupation.

The European Union remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine and its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia must immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its troops and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, the EU called.

They also noted that Russia held regional and local elections on its territory in very limited conditions due to aggression against Ukraine. In particular, the Kremlin has stepped up internal repression, introducing military censorship and persecuting opposition politicians, civil society organizations and independent media or others critical.

Russian pseudo-elections in occupied territories: briefly

  • Russia held quasi-elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. However, neither the world nor Kyiv recognize the so-called “elections” of the Russians. Moreover, many Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories tried everything to avoid voting.
  • It should be noted that the Council of Europe declared on September 11 that Russia's pseudo-elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine were invalid in accordance with international law.
