The United States said that they do not have the opportunity to sit out during Russia’s war against Ukraine. The head of the Pentagon explained what the goal of American President Joe Biden is.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at a briefing on December 2 that the United States is working to strengthen Ukraine. The US Army General also named the main reasons why Ukraine is important for the United States.

What Austin said about the war in Ukraine

Lloyd Austin said that during the war the Russian army had become weakened. In particular, this happened thanks to Ukrainian soldiers and help.

“First and foremost, this is due to the incredibly brave Ukrainian troops. But Ukraine's achievement is also the result of bipartisan U.S. leadership – and the coalition of about 50 countries that we have built,” Austin said.

The Pentagon chief added that:

  • Ukraine is trying to protect its sovereignty and independence, so support from Western partners is fair;
  • The Kremlin is waging an unjust imperial war of aggression, while Ukraine is waging a defensive war for national survival.

And you can feel this energy on earth. And this gives Ukraine a huge strategic advantage for a just cause,” said the American general.

According to him, there are four main reasons why Ukraine is so important to the United States:

  • Putin's war is a serious and direct threat to security in Europe and beyond;
  • Russia's aggression is a clear challenge to our NATO allies;
  • the Kremlin's deliberate cruelty is an attack on our shared values of democracy and decency;
  • Putin's war is a frontal assault on the rules-based international order.

According to Austin, it is the outcome of this struggle that will determine global security for the decade ahead . That is why the States do not have the opportunity to sit out.

“The United States wants a free and sovereign Ukraine that can defend itself today and deter new Russian aggression in the future. That is Biden's goal,” Lloyd Austin said.

According to him, the United States, together with its allies, is helping Kyiv become stronger to resist any Russian aggression in the future.

“That's why we are working with our allies and partners to help Ukraine build a future force that can fend off even greater Russian aggression in the coming years,” Austin said.

What the US did not give to the Ukrainian Armed Forces

  • The former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and ex-commander of the US-led coalitions in Iraq and Afghanistan said that the world did not give Ukraine air superiority and many other opportunities for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to break through the types of defenses that the enemy has in the South in the summer of 2023.
  • Retired American General David Petraeus said that there was a delay in making decisions on the M1, a delay in the approval of Leopard tanks.
  • He also noted that the West delayed the decision on cluster munitions, which are extremely useful on the battlefield, and long-range missile systems for MLRS. In addition, they hesitated regarding Western-style aircraft.
