The leader of South Korea explained under what conditions the country can supply weapons to Ukraine. After all, North Korea recently signed a mutual defense treaty with Russia.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yul said he would discuss with NATO leaders the clear threat North Korea poses to Europe by deepening military ties with Russia.

What South Korea Says

Yoon Seok-yul answered a question about whether Seoul would allow arms supplies to Ukraine. According to him, South Korea will monitor “the level and content of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea“.

Seoul will make a decision on arms support for Ukraine based on how the new military agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang operates, the South Korean president said.

According to him, this will include the following areas:

  • arms trade,
  • military technology transfer,
  • strategic assistance materials.

“Military cooperation between Russia and North Korea poses a clear threat and a serious challenge to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in Europe,” the politician said. It is worth noting that relations between South Korea and Russia worsened after Moscow received batches of ballistic missiles and artillery from Pyongyang for the war against Ukraine.

South Korea protested when Vladimir Putin went to Pyongyang and signed an agreement with Kim Jong-un on mutual assistance “in the event of aggression against one of the parties.”

By the way, the agreement between Russia and the Kremlin provides for a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” Putin called the document “fundamental” and one that will form the basis of relations between Russia and the DPRK “in the long term.”
