Several citizens of Slovakia tried to get permission to go and fight on the side of Ukraine. But Slovak President Peter Pellegrini rejected all of these requests.

Four people asked to join the Ukrainian army, 24 Kanal reported, citing TASR.

Slovaks must obtain permission to fight in a foreign country

During his term, Pellegrini officially received four requests from people who expressed a desire to fight against Russia.

One of them was submitted by a citizen during the term of former President Zuzana Čaputová. But his fate was decided by the current head of state, who took over Slovakia in the spring of 2024.

TASR learned about this from the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic.

If citizens of Slovakia want to legally join the fighting on the side of the Ukrainian army, they must ask the president of the republic in advance for permission to serve in the armed forces of another state, the department explained at the same time.

Otherwise, they face criminal prosecution.

By the way, Pellegrini himself supported Ukraine and the transfer of military aid before becoming president, but then, together with Prime Minister Fico, they spoke out against the supply of weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Slovak President also stated that supporting a war that has not achieved results in two years is a tragedy.
