The petition to save the defenders of Mariupol has gained more than 1 million signatures/www.change.org
On May 6, a petition was created on the Change.org website calling for the rescue of all those on the territory of Azovstal. An appeal from activists is addressed to the UN and its head, António Guterres.
As of the morning of May 10, the “Save Mariupol” petition has already gained more than 1 million signatures, Channel 24 reports .
With this petition, activists, non-governmental and non-profit organizations, politicians and celebrities are calling on the UN and the Secretary General to start an urgent Extraction procedure.
Extraction aims to move people from enemy-controlled territory to a safe zone. This process has nothing to do with surrender. Moreover, the defenders of Mariupol declared that they would fight to the end and would not lay down their arms.
The extraction procedure implies an agreement on the withdrawal of military personnel from a certain territory to the territory of a third state.
Extraction in the case of Ukraine provides for, by agreement of two warring parties, that is, Ukraine and Russia, the removal by a third country of military personnel – defenders from the Azovstal plant .
The petition, which has already collected more than 1 million signatures, calls for:
- ensuring an urgent ceasefire with guarantees from both sides in Mariupol;
- organization of immediate monitoring of compliance with the ceasefire by a third party;
- organization of sea evacuation of the civilian population and Ukrainian military personnel to the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government or to the territory of a third intermediary state. Maritime evacuation may be accompanied by a land-based humanitarian corridor for civilians and military to territory controlled by the Ukrainian government or to a third intermediary state.
The text of the petition notes that the time at Azovstal goes by a matter of hours, and the invaders partially broke into the territory of the plant, do not stop shelling the shelter and storming the positions of Ukrainian soldiers. Every minute of delay can cost huge losses on the part of everyone who found shelter on the territory of the plant.
It is also reported that the civilian population and military personnel defending the heroic city of Mariupol are forced to survive in inhuman conditions, and a number of world leaders are already recognized the actions of the aggressor country as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
The Russian armed forces continue to violate the rules of war, resort to non-traditional weapons, regularly and purposefully attack the places of residence of the civilian population, wounded military personnel, bodies of dead soldiers. – the petition says.
Add that only in the first 22 hours after the creation of the petition has collected 166 signatures out of 200,000 required votes. If she gets 1,500,000 signatures, the petition will likely become one of the most signed petitions on Change.org.
