The Orban government announced “consultations” with the population regarding Ukraine’s membership in the EU

The Hungarian government intends to hold the thirteenth consultations with the population on the issue of supporting Ukraine's membership in the European Union.

This was announced by Orban's government secretary Tamas Manzer, reports the Hungarian publication Alfahir.

“Viktor Orban is once again doing a great service to Vladimir Putin by mobilizing Hungarian public opinion against Ukraine’s accession to the EU with the help of manipulative questions from the so-called nationalist propaganda campaign,” the resource writes.

Alfahir writes that “these consultations are likely to be full of false questions that discredit Ukraine.”

— Do you think that Ukraine has a place in the European Union? Have your say during the national consultation starting soon!” Mentzer said in the video.

The subsequent text, delivered by a representative of Viktor Orbán’s government, plays into the Russian narrative and encourages citizens to say “no” to the main issue of the consultations.

“Ukraine is now in a state of war, therefore, if the country is admitted to the European Union, the war will be transferred to the bloc, and a significant part of the EU funds will go to Ukraine,” says the secretary.

Mentzer suggests that EU membership comes with certain military obligations, and that Ukraine's admission could be realized in the near future, during the current state of war.

The truth is that EU membership for Ukraine does not impose any military obligations on EU members, and any obligations will be decided jointly by the countries, so Orban could, as always, take advantage of the blackmail opportunity created by the veto, the publication writes.

Another statement that will be noted during the consultations, that Ukraine will receive funds intended for Hungary, is also untrue.

It is noted that during the consultations, the Orban government is preparing to use an argument against Ukraine that infringes on the rights of the Hungarian minority.

Recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Budapest does not consider any progress on the issue of negotiations on Ukraine’s further accession to the EU appropriate. According to him, Kyiv is allegedly not suitable for EU membership until there is peace.
