So far, Russian troops have problems, but they continue to advance across the territory of the eastern regions of Ukraine. However, they will soon reach the point where they will not be able to continue the active offensive.

This opinion was expressed on July 20 by analysts at the Washington Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Experts believe that the Russians are moving closer to territory that is more favorable for the defenders of Ukraine.

Why the Russian offensive will slow down

According to military experts, now it is already clearly observed that it is difficult for Russian troops to advance. However, so far they only capture relatively sparsely populated territories.

The real difficulties for them will begin when they approach the M 03 highway around Slavyansk and Bakhmut. There, after all, they will be forced to relentlessly storm positions not in open areas. This is a motorway that is part of the European route E40.

The density of population and development in these areas increases the closer they approach the E40. They will face terrain that will be much more favorable for the Ukrainian defenders. Therefore, the current Russian offensive in Donbas is likely to culminate somewhere along the E40 in the coming weeks. – ISW experts wrote.
