Russian invaders are preparing to blow up the dam of the Svatovsky reservoir in the Lugansk region. Thus, the Russians want to buy time for themselves.
This was told to Channel 24 by a military expert, instructor pilot and reserve colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Roman Svitan. According to the Center for National Resistance, a hostile engineering unit arrived in the temporarily occupied city of Svatovo.
The Russian occupiers are planning to assess the possibility of undermining the dam of the local reservoir.
What are the consequences of a dam failure?
As Svitan noted, the reservoir is located to the east of Svatovoe. It has a relatively small size. According to the military expert, undermining the dam of the reservoir will entail only a slight increase in the water level in the Red River, which is a tributary of the Seversky Donets.
“The Red River, which flows from Svatovoe towards Kremennaya, is a kind of “line of demarcation”. It is one of the levels of the defense on the basis of which the Russians hold the front line from Svatovoe to Kremennaya,” Svitan said.
Will the Russians be able to hold back the advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The colonel of the reserve of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that the Russians really have such an “option” – to blow up the dam of the Svatovsky reservoir. The occupiers are counting on this option to contain the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, this will not help the invaders much.
When the dam is blown up, there will be no wave as such. At first, the water level in the Red River will rise, but it will fall after 5-7 days, no more. That is, the Russians can delay our advance for a maximum of a week,” Svitan said.
The military expert believes that if the invaders decide to blow up the dam in the Luhansk region, then this will not entail big problems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The situation in the Lugansk region: the essentials
- Russian occupiers are transferring paratroopers and heavy equipment from the Bakhmut direction to Kremennaya. The head of the Luhansk OVA, Sergei Gaidai, noted that the goal for the Russians now is to keep Kremennaya, since “the flanks can open, and then this whole group, which is constantly storming Bakhmut, will be broken in half.”
- The occupiers again had problems in the territories they temporarily occupied. This time “cotton” came to the main gas pipeline in Lutugino. Due to the explosion, gas was turned off in the entire area.
- Partisans are actively working in the occupied territories. On January 6, near Shchastya in the Luhansk region, they destroyed the railway line between Luhansk and Lantratovka. This was done using an improvised explosive device.
