The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education and Science has recommended that schools abolish the production and presentation of state-issued gold and silver medals.
Why is it recommended refuse medals in schools
People's Deputy Natalia Pipa stated that in recent years the number of medals received has increased, but there has been a decrease in the level of knowledge of school graduates during the pandemic and full-scale war.
The refusal of medals will help save state budget funds. However, instead of medals, schools will be able to award the best students with their own distinctions, explained Natalia Pipa.

According to the educational ombudsman of Ukraine Sergey Gorbachev, 1.8 million UAH was spent in 2023 for the purchase of 21.3 thousand medals, and in 2022 — about 1.77 million UAH for 20.6 thousand medals.
For this reason The Verkhovna Rada Committee recommended that the Ministry of Education and Science stop making these medals. The fact of the distinction itself will remain, but they plan to indicate it in documents.
Previously, gold and silver medals gave advantages during admission to institutions of higher education. However, in recent years this has not been taken into account, as noted on the website of the educational ombudsman.
