Semenyk said that the Met has finally recognized Ilya Repin as a Ukrainian artist. The portrait of the writer Vsevolod Garshin kept in the gallery has an inscription that it is the work of a Ukrainian.

It is worth noting that Repin comes from a Cossack family nicknamed Ripa. The artist was born in 1844 in the Osinovka settlement near Chuguev, Kharkov province. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and painted his canvases in the Russian Empire.

Ivan Aivazovsky, known for his seascapes, is also recognized as a Ukrainian. The painting “Ship in the Moonlight” also indicated the real origin of the artist.

I will rejoice separately for Aivazovsky, because my first real experience with art was the art gallery of Feodosia. I was so struck by those works that I still remember a very lively gallery. And the catalog from this gallery was the favorite book. And how I dream to get there again and to have all the work in place, – said Semenik.

Aivazovsky was born in Feodosia in 1817 in the family of an Armenian shopkeeper. The artist's family moved to the Crimea from Galicia in 1812, where his ancestors came from Western Armenia.

Aivazovsky also studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, so he was often called a Russian artist. However, the artist lived and worked in the Crimea, where he painted his famous marinas.
