The meeting in Ukraine is just a response to an invitation: will the European Union be able to “hack” Hungary

by alex

The European Parliament voted for a resolution calling for the activation of Article 7 against Hungary. Her right to vote could be taken away.

Tell Channel 24 about this the head of the Hungarian community of Kiev and the Kiev region, Tibor Tompa, noting that this is not the first vote condemning the behavior of Orban and his government.

It is important that the European deputies still put the squeeze on this question – and Orbán had specific legal consequences. After all, his behavior is simply shameful.

This is not the first such vote condemning Hungary's behavior. The vast majority of MEPs condemn Orbán's disgraceful behavior. Interestingly, even three deputies from the Hungarian opposition voted in favor. This is political pressure on Orban. And all this is done correctly. It is important that there is not only political pressure, but also legal pressure,” Tompa emphasized.

Can relations between Hungary and Ukraine change

As Tompa recalled, a meeting is planned between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjártó in Transcarpathia at the end of January. Don't expect much here. Hungary is unlikely to change its policy. The meeting in Ukraine here is rather a simple response to an invitation.

You shouldn't hope for any miracle. The only thing we can hope for is when strong states like Germany and France finally take on Orban and force him to act democratically,” Tompa said.

In general, Hungary is now somewhat split. There is democratic Budapest, where Ukraine is fully supported, and “Orban’s serf” Hungary. They are constantly putting obstacles in the process of helping Kyiv.

Already now Orban is trying to block the allocation of 50 billion euros for Ukraine from the EU. But the most interesting thing is that Hungary’s contribution there is not so significant. There have already been thoughts that it is possible to do without Orban.

Of these 50 billion, Hungary accounts for about 500 million. Already in some European countries they were saying that they could do without Hungary. Orbán would not want this. In Hungary there are already signals in the press that he is ready not to block the money. But again he begins to bargain that all this needs to be reviewed annually… Another shameful step from him, Tompa noted.

Orban is criticized in the EU : briefly

  • The European Parliament voted for the resolution on Hungary. They called on the EU Council to activate Article 7 against Hungary. They also propose to launch an internal investigation into unlocking 10 billion euros in favor of Budapest.
  • In addition, Orban opposes the 50 billion euro aid plan for Ukraine. He stated this at a joint conference with Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, who is also considered pro-Russian.
  • In parallel, preparations for organizing a meeting between Zelensky and Orban continue. On January 29, Kuleba and Szijjarto are scheduled to meet in Transcarpathia.
