The Swiss Parliament has refused to make legislative changes that would automatically grant citizenship to those born in the country.
On June 15, Swiss MP Stefania Presiosa Batu introduced a bill providing for automatic citizenship for those born in Switzerland. The deputies did not support the initiative, 112 votes were against, and 75 parliamentarians were in favor.
Swiss citizenship will not be given from birth
Batu Law assumed that a child born in Switzerland to foreign parents and trained in Switzerland would automatically acquire Swiss citizenship at the age of 18. Opponents of this idea argued that being born and raised in Switzerland did not guarantee integration. In addition, automating the process at the federal level would be contrary to the cantonal naturalization process.
A similar proposal was rejected in December 2021 by the Council of States, the Swiss upper house. Birthright citizenship is rare outside of the Americas, where it remains the norm. Besides these regions, only Chad, Lesotho, Tanzania, Tuvalu and Pakistan have it, another 30 countries have limited forms.
How to get Swiss citizenship
Obtaining Swiss citizenship is long and difficult. To do this, you need to live at least 10 years in Switzerland with the appropriate type of permit and a long list of other requirements. Applications for Swiss citizenship must be approved by the federal administration, the cantons and the municipality where the applicant lives. In the end, many who call Switzerland home never managed to become Swiss, sometimes even after several generations.
And here are Putin's children
Earlier, the media reported that in 2015 Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva gave birth to a son to Putin. The birth took place in the clinic of St. Anne in the Swiss town of Lugano in the canton of Ticino.
The birth took place in Switzerland, because they wanted to keep everyone in the strictest confidence. In Switzerland, Kabaeva probably lived in a private villa. Therefore, if the relevant law were adopted, the son of Kabaeva and Putin could automatically obtain citizenship of the country after reaching the age of 18.
Journalists also released information that in 2019 Kabaeva gave birth to a second son to Putin.
