Alexander Tkachenko finally confirmed that the lease of the premises of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra for the UOC-MP will not be extended. So from January 1, they will not be able to hold services there.

On December 31, 2022, the issue of the lease agreement of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and the Refectory Church from the Refectory Chamber ends and it will not be continued. The further use of the property of the Reserve will be decided by the commission.

The days of the UOC-MP in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra are coming to an end

The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recommended that Oleksandr Rudnik, General Director of the National Preserve Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, not renew the lease agreements of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Refectory Church from the Refectory Chamber, which expires on December 31 this year. This contract has been ongoing since June 17, 2016.

The issue of the lease agreement expires on December 31 of this year in accordance with the agreement 1-6 and 2-6 dated 06/17/2016 “on the time-based gratuitous use by a religious organization of parts of religious buildings that are state property. We recommended not to renew the lease, taking into account the expiration of the Agreements and by the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 820/2022 On the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine dated December 1, 2022 “On certain aspects of the activities of religious organizations in Ukraine and the application of personal special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions)”, Tkachenko explained.

This Oleksandr Rudnik sent a letter to the governor of the Assumption Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Pavel Lebed, who is popularly called Pasha “Mercedes.” He was given to understand that from January 1, 2023, he would not be able to use this church property.

At present, an interdepartmental government commission has been established to study the issue of further use of the Reserve's property. Accordingly, given that the agreement expires at the Upper Lavra, then before the end of the verification period, the use of church property becomes impossible, the minister of culture added.

  • On December 1, the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was registered as a monastery as part of the OCU. Minister of Culture Alexander Tkachenko noted that the entire territory of the Lavra is state property. At the same time, while the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra did not pass into the OCU, no one has yet accepted such documents. Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Epiphanius specified that the transition of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra to the WTO cannot be instantaneous.
  • Recently, the abbot of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Pasha “Mercedes” during an address to the faithful said that from January 1, the clergy The UOC-MP may deprive access to the main temples of the Lavra. He addressed them in Russian and resorted to cynical manipulation, saying that in the days of the USSR they were allowed to pray, and now they allegedly do dirty tricks on the “holy, catholic and apostolic church.” For some reason, he did not mention that mass arrests and persecution of clergy and religious preachers were carried out in the USSR.
  • After that, he recorded a 15-minute video to the president in which he complained about life, complained that the UOC-MP did not received a written notice of the termination of the lease on January 1 and asked Zelensky to “protect” the UOC-MP.
