NATO's largest exercise in decades will begin this week, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
It is indicated that about 90 thousand military personnel of all member countries of the Alliance, as well as candidate Sweden, will take part in Steadfast Defender.
— This Article 5 exercise is a clear demonstration of transatlantic unity and strength, and our determination to continue to do whatever is necessary to protect and defend each other. This includes ensuring adequate forces, capabilities and ammunition, — said the Secretary General.
According to the exercise scenario, Russia will launch an attack on the territory of the Alliance member countries, which will lead to the application of the collective defense clause of the NATO treaty.

As DW writes, Steadfast Defender 2024 will also feature more than 50 ships — from aircraft carriers to destroyers, as well as more than 80 fighters, helicopters and drones and at least 1.1 thousand combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles.
As the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Christopher Cavoli said, the exercise will show that NATO can conduct and support complex operations on land, sea, in the air, cyberspace and space “for several months, along thousands of kilometers, from the Far North to Central and Eastern Europe and in any conditions”.
Previously, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and General Manager of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency Stacey Cummings signed contracts for the purchase of about 220,000 155-mm artillery shells worth $1.2 billion.
