Russia is trying to distract the world from the war in Ukraine. To achieve this, the aggressor country plans to undermine the internal situation in neighboring countries.

Thus, the Institute for the Study of War points to the Kremlin’s preparations to destabilize the situation in Moldova.

Russia wants to split Moldova

On November 30, Russia, represented by Sergei Lavrov, participated at a meeting of the OSCE foreign ministers for the first time since the start of the great war. The Russian diplomat made a number of absurd statements. In particular, he openly threatened Moldova with a “hybrid war.” Lavrov said that this country is the next “victim of the West.”

ISW analysts noted that the Russian threat did not come out of nowhere. Moscow really plans to once again undermine Moldova from within, in order to distract the world from its crimes in Ukraine.

Thus, experts drew attention to several points against the background of the statement by the head of the Foreign Ministry of the aggressor country.

After his speech, the next day, December 1, the head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, a member of the banned pro-Russian Shor party, announced that the state enterprise Moldovagaz had blocked gas supplies to Gagauzia from the Turkish supplier. According to Gutsul, the regional government agreed with a foreign supplier to purchase gas at a lower price than Moldovagaz. Hutsul accused Chisinau of preventing the residents of Gaguasia from receiving cheap gas for the winter.

At the same time, the head of Moldovagaz, Vadim Ceban, rejected reproaches to the pro-Russian policy. He noted that the company does not have the physical and legal ability to block gas supplies to Gagauzia.

In addition, earlier, on November 13, Moldovan President Maia Sandu rejected Hutsul's request for a place for her in the Cabinet of Ministers due to her membership in Shor.

Let us remind you that in Moldova the court banned the Shor party, since Russia uses it to promote its interests. In particular, the head of the party, Ilhan Shor, incited protests in September 2022 – June 2023 to overthrow the current government of the country.

And on November 27, the leader of the Moldovan Party of Regions, Alexander Kalinin, was deprived of citizenship because he supported the war in Ukraine. On December 1, this politician announced attempts to recruit Moldovan volunteers to participate in hostilities on the side of the Russians.

Kyiv helped Chisinau expose Moscow’s insidious plan

In February, President Zelensky warned Sandu about Russia’s intention to change the political order in Moldova. Ukrainian intelligence learned about the Kremlin’s plan.

According to the head of state, the Main Intelligence Directorate intercepted a document indicating who, when and how plans to split Moldova.
