Russian invaders want to cut off Ukrainian communication lines in Lysichansk. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to return Izyum and Lyman.

Russian infidels are firing artillery to the west and northwest of Izyum. And this may mean that Ukrainian troops are conducting a counteroffensive in this direction. This was reported at the Institute for the Study of War on June 16.

The battles for Izyum and Liman continue, the enemy wants to cut off Lisichansk

The Russian military is prioritizing operations to disrupt Ukrainian landline communications (GLOC) to Lysichansk from several directions, the report said.

If the counter-offensive north of Izyum is confirmed, then this means that the Ukrainian military wants to “break the Russian lines of communication in the area of Izyum and Liman.” That is, to return the settlements under control.

The battle for Severodonetsk

The Russians continue to storm Severodonetsk. They are trying to take control of the city. Oleksiy Gromov, Deputy Chief of the Main Operational Headquarters, said that Ukrainian troops continue to resist. They stop the Russian invaders near Metelkino and Sirotino, southeast of Severodonetsk.

The Institute for the Study of War reports that the invaders intend to capture these villages as well, and not just focus on Severodonetsk. Gromov said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine maintain several logistical routes to Severodonetsk, although four bridges have already been destroyed.

Key messages from the Institute for the Study of War

  • Russian troops staged an unsuccessful offensive to the northwest from Sloviansk, while Ukrainian troops reportedly resumed preparations for a counteroffensive west of Izyum.
  • Ukrainians and Russians clashed north and northeast of Kharkov. But not a single significant territory changed hands.
  • The invaders continue to strengthen their reserve positions in the north-west of the Kherson region. They are probably waiting for a counter-offensive from the Ukrainian defenders.
  • The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, continued discussing and signing patronage agreements with Russian regional officials.
