The IAEA reported new explosions near the captured ZNPP

At the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in the occupied Energodar, it is restless again. International experts stated that they heard about 20 detonations near the energy facility and artillery.

The situation at the Zaporozhye NPP was commented by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. He stated that the sound of artillery fire was recorded near the station and the temporary loss of its only backup power line.

Nuclear safety once again under threat

Grossi also voiced the data of the IAEA experts who have been at the ZNPP since early January. According to him, they have heard about 20 explosions in recent days.

This is an alarming trend, demonstrating the urgency and importance of creating a nuclear safety and security zone at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, – the head of the organization emphasized.

In addition, he said that he continues his diplomatic efforts to agree and implement a security zone as soon as possible.

Note! The IAEA team also reported that the backup 330 kilovolt power line was disconnected at the ZNPP on the morning of February 25 due to the intensification of hostilities. However, the very next day it was possible to resume the operation of the power line.

We need to prevent nuclear risks

  • Recall that there are still five IAEA teams present at Ukrainian NPPs. They continue to monitor the nuclear safety and security situation by regularly publishing reports on their work.
  • However, the aggravation of hostilities near the station in Energodar is not the only factor that calls into question the world's nuclear security. In fact, Putin recently announced that Russia was ending its participation in the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty.
  • This agreement between Moscow and Washington dealt with the control of nuclear weapons by both the United States and Russia. Such a decision by the dictator may lead to the return of the arms race.
  • In addition, the Pentagon is concerned about the fact that China has increased the import of Russian nuclear fuel for the CFR-60 reactor located on Changbiao Island.
  • The US defense department does not rule out that by 2035 China may increase the number of nuclear warheads to 1,500 pieces.
