After being released from Russian captivity, Ukrainian citizens are often in a very serious condition. In particular, catastrophic weight loss among Ukrainians has been recorded.
Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets spoke about this at the International Conference Freedom or Fear. The event is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
– The largest officially recorded weight loss of a person during 5 months of Russian captivity – 77 kilograms, — Lubinets said, commenting on the return of prisoners of war.
The Ombudsman cited the words of one of the former prisoners. When asked what the Russian occupiers fed them in captivity, the Ukrainian replied: It seems that it was just colored water.
They are watching now
Lubinets clarified that Ukraine has no information about the exact location of our captured military personnel. The occupiers prohibit writing letters.
The official also said that, in addition to military personnel, there are currently about 28 thousand Ukrainian civilians in Russian captivity.
– In my opinion, this is a new system of suppression of the civilian population in temporarily occupied territories. To date, 28 thousand Ukrainian citizens have been confirmed to be in captivity of the Russian Federation, — he emphasized.
According to Lubinets, the Ukrainian side cannot check their condition, transfer medicines and gain access to Russian prisons.
He called on international organizations to help and use all possible tools to protect the rights of captured Ukrainians.

Liberation of Ukrainians from captivity: what is known
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported that there have been no exchanges between Ukraine and the Russian Federation since August 7.
It was noted that Moscow had practically frozen this process. The aggressor is trying to create the impression that the Ukrainian authorities are not working on this issue.
At the same time, President Vladimir Zelensky said that, despite the absence of public exchanges of prisoners of war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, they have not actually been suspended. This often happens on the battlefield.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, about 90% of Ukrainian prisoners of war suffered torture, rape, threats of sexual violence or other forms of ill-treatment in Russian captivity.
