Mikhail Gorbachev, the only president of the USSR, passed away on August 30 at the age of 91 . He spoke about Ukraine in the best traditions of Russian propaganda.
Gorbachev lived longer than the USSR existed. Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas remarked that “the dead are either said well or not, but not this time”, channel 24 informs.
Anusauskas noted that from the point of view of democratic states, Gorbachev was a criminal. It was he who ordered the brutal suppression of peaceful protests in Vilnius, Tbilisi, Alma-Ata, Baku and other cities.
In addition, in Lithuania they urged not to overestimate the role of Gorbachev in the collapse of the USSR. This is an achievement of the peoples striving for freedom.
What did Gorbachev say about Ukraine
Channel 24 collected in the material all the outrageous quotes of Gorbachev, which as if extracted from the “Kremlin manual” and vividly illustrate its aggressive position.
“Blessed” the occupation of Crimea
Since 2014 – the occupation of Crimea and the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine – Gorbachev has supported Vladimir Putin. In particular, he “blessed” the occupation of Crimea.
According to Gorbachev, it was not the seizure of foreign territories and a rigged referendum, but apparently “the will of the people.” Moreover, Gorbachev suggested that he himself would have acted like Putin.
He spoke about the revival of the Soyuz and the “future of Ukraine with Russia”
From time to time Gorbachev voiced nostalgic thoughts about the USSR. In addition, sometimes he could not hide his imperial desires and assumed the possibility of a new “alliance”.
In the end, Gorbachev lost touch with reality so much that in an interview he issued an absurd statement that the future of Ukraine – like with Russia.
I am always for the free will of people, and the majority in Crimea wanted to reunite with Russia. If I were still in power, the Soviet Union would exist and Crimea would be part of it,” Gorbachev said.
“Ukrainian conflict”
When Russia invaded Ukraine and occupied part of the Donbas, Gorbachev started talking about some mythical “Ukrainian conflict.” Also, in the best traditions of the Kremlin propaganda, he spread fakes that it was not Russia, but “both sides are to blame for the use of especially dangerous types of weapons.”
After February 24, Gorbachev suddenly “changed his shoes”
When Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Gorbachev suddenly changed his shoes minimally. Obviously, he understood that the terrorist country would completely isolate itself from the civilized world and wanted to portray himself as a “good Russian.” At the same time, he did not have the courage to speak out publicly.
Journalist Alexei Venediktov, commenting on Gorbachev's attitude to a full-scale war, said that he was “upset.” Gorbachev seemed to “understand everything” and saw that “his life's work” was being destroyed. According to Venediktov, “freedom is Gorbachev's business”.
