The countries of the European Union have reached a consensus on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. Ukraine can receive the corresponding status already on June 23-24.

Consensus was reached at the meeting of the EU foreign ministers

French Foreign Minister and Minister for European Affairs of the European Ministry Clement Bon said that the EU countries during the discussion came to a full consensus on the issue of Ukraine. He made the corresponding statement after the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU countries in Luxembourg.

We had a discussion today that showed broad agreement, I will even say full agreement on moving forward on these issues, first of all, with regard to the possibility of recognizing the status of a candidate for Ukraine in the near future,” Bon said.

He added that the issue of granting Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the EU is now in the hands of the leaders of the EU countries. At the same time, Clement Bon stressed that applications from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia will be considered separately.

According to him, now in Europe there is a will to tell Ukraine that “the time for discussion on European integration has begun.”

Clement Bon reminded that granting candidate status does not mean immediate accession to the EU. He stressed that the process of joining the European Union is complex and long.

At the same time, the French Foreign Minister recalled the “European Political Community”, which French leader Emmanuel Macron proposes to create. According to him, due to the fact that the process of joining the EU will take a long time, Macron proposed this “additional measure”.

Ukraine should receive the status of a candidate member of the EU: what is known

On June 17, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the EU. Together with our country, Moldova received the recommendation.

In order for Ukraine to receive this status, our state must fulfill a number of conditions. Among them:

  • to strengthen the fight against corruption;
  • to ensure that anti-money laundering legislation is in line with European standards;< /li>
  • introduce anti-oligarchic legislation;
  • adopt a new law on the media;
  • complete the reform of national minorities.

Ukraine has already begun some demands to fulfillment. In particular, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, which President Volodymyr Zelensky signed on June 21.

The EU summit will take place on June 23-24. It is on it that the members of the European Union must decide on granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate.
