The Foreign Ministry explained why the Zaporozhye NPP is so important for Russia

< p _ngcontent-sc90="" class="news-annotation">Russia is using the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant for nuclear blackmail for two purposes. The Kremlin wants to disrupt Ukraine's energy balance, which could lead to political consequences.

Russia wants to kick the ZNPP out of Ukraine's energy system

Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba explained the logic of Russian terrorists. According to him, the Russians, having occupied the ZNPP, are striving to achieve two goals.

The Kremlin's primary goal, as Kuleba said, is to knock the ZNPP out of the energy system of Ukraine. The Minister explained that this would upset the energy balance of Ukraine.

Accordingly, according to Kuleba, the energy security of Ukraine will worsen on the eve of the winter season.

The second goal concerns the European Union directly. When you have insane gas prices, you are everywhere where you can try to compensate for the increase in electricity capacity. What is the easiest way for Europeans to get more electricity? To increase imports from Ukraine due to the fact that we are part of ENTSO-E – the European electricity network – we can really solve a number of problems in countries such as Poland and others in terms of energy security, – said Kuleba.

The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry noted that any country closes exports when its internal energy balance worsens. Consequently, knocking out the ZNPP can become a chain of successive actions, at the end of which there are political and social consequences.

“That is, you knock out the Zaporizhzhya NPP, disrupt the energy balance of Ukraine, Ukraine begins to close exports, the energy balance of Europe worsens, the situation in Europe becomes even worse in terms of energy security, prices, and the corresponding political and social consequences continue,” Kuleba summed up.

What is the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP
  • The Russians occupied the Zaporozhye NPP in March. In August-September, the invaders resorted to nuclear terrorism and threatened to blow up the ZNPP. The Russians mined the nuclear power plant.
  • Because of the threat of a nuclear catastrophe, an IAEA mission went to the ZNPP. They announced a violation of the physical integrity of the ZNPP, but do not blame Russia for this. In a report, the IAEA confirmed that Russia had placed military equipment on the territory of the ZNPP.
  • After the main part of the IAEA mission left the nuclear power plant, Russia resumed provocations. Therefore, on the night of September 10-11, the Zaporozhye NPP was completely stopped.
  • The occupiers damaged all the communication lines of the Zaporizhzhya NPP with the energy system of Ukraine with their shelling.
