Russia is actively preparing for the presidential elections, which are due to take place in 2024. Thus, in the aggressor country the LGBT social movement was declared an extremist organization.

The LGBT ban may be part of Vladimir Putin's campaign to increase repression and promote a conservative order. The head of the center for political studios “Doctrine” told Channel 24 whether he shares this opinion and also suggested what successes await the flock of the head of the Kremlin.

What will Putin go to the elections with?

Over the past decades, the specifics of the United Russia party have remained unchanged. Putin will go to the elections with the following narratives:

  • maintaining the power vertical;
  • maintaining a certain abstract stability – moving forward slowly;
  • adaptation to new conditions and, accordingly, stable leadership.

These are slogans of somewhat bureaucratic force. They are traditionally exploited by the United Russia party and its nominees, and 2024 will not be an exception,” emphasized the head of the Doctrine center for political studios.

The previous municipal campaign, which took place in Russia, clearly showed that there were no new heights of ideological positioning. Therefore, topics related to LGBT are not electorally significant.

Let us remember that Putin, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, suddenly came out in defense of the LGBT community.

In addition, Putin’s speech came on the same day that the Russian Ministry of Justice appealed to the Supreme Court with a demand to recognize the “international public movement of LGBT people” as extremist.

The flock awaits victories

Western intelligence agencies have suggested that the Russian occupiers could launch a wider offensive after Vladimir Putin's expected victory in the March 2024 presidential election.

From a political point of view, no one was postponing the offensive actions currently taking place. Russian troops continue to “probe” the area around Avdeevka, Bozhko explained.

Attempts to take Avdiivka with such insane forces and losses are clearly a political goal. The occupiers were ordered to achieve results even before the elections in order to demonstrate a certain level of progress and show that “SVO” is gradually moving forward.

Russia's ability to advance in the spring will depend on the winter campaign. The aggressor country is unlikely to stop offensive actions; the occupiers will continue to carry out operations as best they can.

No thesis about a “situational pause” at the front will add anything significantly to Putin’s support – and he understands this. His flock expects at least small encouraging successes, as they will continue to spread on social networks and inflate greater successes, noted Yaroslav Bozhko.

Presidential elections in Russia: what is known

  • In August 2023, the Russian dictator's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said that Putin would be re-elected for another term with over 90% of the vote.
  • A report from the Institute for the Study of War says the Kremlin appears to be concerned about how changing perceptions of Russia's war in Ukraine will affect the results of Russia's March 2024 presidential election. The Russian leader's henchmen are taking steps to ensure that actual support for President Vladimir Putin in the election does not rest on Russia's successes on the battlefield.
  • The Center for National Resistance also reports that due to the growing socio-economic tension in the south and east of Ukraine, the occupiers cannot fully begin preparations for the so-called “elections” of the President of Russia.
