The European Union wants to get rid of Russian gas no later than 2027 – European Commissioner

The European Union intends to get rid of Russian gas by 2027 at the latest.

This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson at a meeting of the EU Council at ministerial level.

According to her, the meeting will discuss the security of gas supplies, because Europe is successfully going through another heating season, which means it’s time to start preparing for the next winter.

— We will discuss the prospects for the gas market, as well as the impact of stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. “We will also discuss the need to continue rapid austerity measures,” noted Kadri Simson.

The European Commissioner emphasized that the European Commission will not continue negotiations with Russia, as it did five years ago, when they agreed on a trilateral gas transit agreement.

In April, the European Parliament should consider a proposal that would allow EU member states to impose an embargo on Russian liquefied gas and not wait for pan-European sanctions.

— According to our EU support plan — we must get rid of Russian gas no later than 2027. We are working intensively to provide landlocked countries with alternative suppliers, and we support Ukraine,” she said.

Previously, the Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Alexey Chernyshov, said that Ukraine is not going to extend the transit of Russian gas after 2024, when the current contract expires.
