The European Union reminded the UK that it does not have the right to independently change the rules of the Brexit agreement that has entered into force and pass such laws. Reported by Reuters.
It is noted that the European Commission is concerned about the London bill on the unhindered access of Northern Ireland to the markets of the rest of Britain. The EU believes that any violation of the Brexit terms would be a violation of international law and jeopardize negotiations on a future agreement.
The Brexit agreement states that from 2021, goods that arrive from mainland Britain to Northern Ireland and then continue to Ireland or other EU countries will be subject to tariffs. Under the new law, Britain itself will be able to establish rules for the movement of goods from the continent to Northern Ireland.
On August 21, the chief negotiator of the European Union on Brexit Michel Barnier said that the deal on the new terms of relations with the UK is being postponed. He noted that at this stage an agreement between the UK and the European Union seems unlikely, and added that the EU is very concerned about the state of the negotiations.
It is known that the EU and Britain cannot find a compromise, in particular, on the issue of fishing. London is reluctant to provide access for European fishermen to their areas, recalling that this is incompatible with the UK's status as an independent state.
The UK officially left the European Union on February 1, 2020. By the end of this year, the parties agreed on a transitional period, during which most of the laws of the European Union will continue to operate.
