The European Parliament has proposed to impose sanctions against Russians who directly support President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. The draft resolution is being prepared for consideration by European parliamentarians, TASS reports.
According to the document, European countries intend to impose sanctions on all Belarusian persons guilty of electoral fraud, violence and repression, as well as Russians involved in supporting the current authorities of Belarus.
In the draft resolution, the Coordination Council, headed by the oppositionist Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, is recognized as the country's provisional government. At the same time, the document recognizes Lukashenko as the illegitimate President of Belarus and calls into question his right to conclude agreements with anyone, including Russia. It is also indicated that the Russian authorities “can threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belarus.”
Earlier, Tikhanovskaya supported the introduction of sanctions by the European Union against the current regime in Belarus. Nevertheless, she stressed that it is the prerogative of each country whether to introduce them or not.
