The European Parliament called on the participants of the EU summit to approve the decision to begin negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU, and also condemned the statements of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about Ukraine’s membership.
This is stated in the adopted non-binding parliamentary resolution, which was approved by 468 votes. 9 members of the European Parliament spoke out against.
Members of the European Parliament called on the participants of the summit on December 14-15 to decide on the start of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as with Bosnia and Herzegovina — subject to the implementation of certain reform steps. Parliamentarians also called for granting candidate status to Georgia.

Lawmakers welcomed the interest and political will of many countries to join the EU and recognized the serious efforts being made to meet the requirements for membership. They also welcomed the readiness of the Armenian government to move closer to the EU.
They believe that the EU should set clear deadlines for candidate countries to join the EU by the end of this decade. However, in their opinion, there should be no fast track to membership.
Parliamentarians also condemned the statements of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about the start of negotiations on accession to the EU with Ukraine, as well as about changing the country’s policy towards Kosovo.

The resolution also emphasized the need to carry out internal EU reforms in parallel with the enlargement process in order to strengthen the EU's ability to effectively integrate new members, in particular by introducing qualified majority voting, which would also apply to decisions in the field of foreign policy, security , as well as in areas related to the process of accession to the European Union.
