The European Commission has allocated €900 million to Hungary to override its veto on aid to Ukraine

by alex

The EU Executive Committee has approved the provision of €900 million to Hungary as part of a frozen recovery fund amid efforts to override Budapest's veto on aid to Ukraine.

The European Commission previously excluded Hungary from its post-pandemic economic recovery program due to concerns about corruption and democratic backsliding by Viktor Orban's government.

And Hungary, in turn, blocked the EU’s decision to provide Ukraine with €50 billion in economic assistance until 2027 and to begin negotiations with Kiev on joining the European Union.

Budapest is also blocking a plan to provide military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of €20 billion and opposes sanctions against the Russian Federation.

The day before, it became known that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in which he threatens to block all decisions on financing Ukraine, the opening of negotiations on accession to the EU and further sanctions against the Russian Federation, unless the strategy for supporting Kiev is revised.
