On the evening of February 8, Vladimir Zelensky dismissed Valery Zaluzhny from the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The European Union commented on this decision of the Ukrainian leader.

The European Commission stated that this internal decision of Ukraine and the EU will continue to provide the necessary support. This was stated by the EC Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Security Nabila Massrali, reports the correspondent of 24 Channel in Brussels.

How the European Union reacted

According to Massrali, it does not matter for the European Union who will lead the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The press secretary of the European Commission says that changing the commander-in-chief is an internal decision of Ukraine, and the prerogative of the president.

The EU's support for Ukraine is unwavering. We are ready to support Ukraine as long as necessary, and we will provide everything necessary, regardless of who will lead the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Massrali said.

Note that the new Colonel General Alexander Syrsky became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The head of state also announced this during his evening address on February 8.

Valery Zaluzhny was fired from his position: main

  • He also reported on updating the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is needed by the challenges of time and war in 2024. He named the names of the military men who are being considered for leadership positions in the army.
  • At the same time, the Ukrainian leader awarded the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny the title of Hero of Ukraine. It is noted that Valery Zaluzhny received the title of Hero for outstanding services to the country. For Ukrainians, the “iron general” has long been an unconditional Hero, but now he has officially received this status.
