The EU is considering a backup plan for military support for Ukraine: what are we talking about?

The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, expressed hope that European officials will be able to move forward regarding further military support for Ukraine within the framework of the European Peace Fund.

He told reporters about this in Brussels before the start of the EU External Relations Council.

He noted that a financing option with the participation of not all EU member states is being discussed if the planned format through the European Peace Fund cannot be agreed upon.

— There are certain proposals in which countries that do not want to do so may not participate. My country and the other EU countries that will participate will carry more weight on their shoulders. Lithuania will be able to do this. It will probably not be a group of 27 countries, but a smaller number of EU countries,” Landsbergis said.

He also categorically denies the assumption of exchanging Ukraine's membership in the EU and NATO for territorial concessions to Russia. Landsbergis said calls for the relinquishment of territories are contrary to international law.

Let us recall that in October the media, citing sources, reported that negotiations on a special fund within the European Peace Fund worth €20 billion to help Ukraine were dragging on, and the European Union did not expect a decision to be agreed upon before the start of the revision of the multi-year EU budget at the summit in December.

In October, foreign ministers failed to agree on the allocation of €500 million from existing funds from the European Peace Fund. According to media reports, the decision was blocked by Hungary.
