The EU for the first time imposed sanctions due to violations of women's rights: the list includes the Russian military

by alex

The Council of the European Union imposed sanctions against nine people and three organizations that violated human rights, in particular, were involved in sexual or gender-based violence. It is important that there are representatives of the enemy army on the list.

A package of sanctions against people and organizations that led to violence against women and girls, the EU introduced on the eve of the International Day for the Protection of Women's Rights, March 7th. As noted in the official statement, in this way the Alliance confirms its determination in the matter of protecting human rights.

What awaits the participants of the sanctioned list

It is known that the sanctions will apply, in particular, to officers of the Moscow police department responsible for the brutal detentions of people, which degrades their dignity.

At the same time, it is important that there will be restrictions on high-ranking officials of the Russian armed forces whose units have been involved in sexual or gender-based violence – that is, say, raped and maimed women. However, in this context, we are talking about March-April 2022.

Let's move from words to deeds. No matter where it happens, we will fight and eradicate all forms of violence against women. We will intensify efforts to counter sexual and gender-based violence in order to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions and fight impunity, said Josep Borrell (High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU).

In addition, the sanctioned lists include:

  • two current Taliban ministers for higher education and for the promotion of virtue; it is they who are involved in the decrees that prohibit women in Afghanistan from receiving higher education;
  • South Sudanese militia commanders who actually used sexual violence as a war tactic;
  • Deputy Interior Minister of Myanmar/Burma;
  • Karchak prison in Iran;
  • Syrian Republican Guard;
  • Office of the Chief of Military Security in Myanmar/Burma;

Note! The assets of individuals and legal entities on this list will be frozen by the European Union. In addition, they will be prohibited from entering the territory of countries that are members of the Alliance, as well as citizens of EU countries and organizations will be prohibited from financing them.

Many international companies support Russian terrorism

Decisions such as the imposition of sanctions against the Russian military are extremely important, because they indicate the involvement of a hostile state in terrorist actions and, for example, make international companies think about the advisability of staying on the Russian market.

So far, unfortunately, in the year since the start of the large-scale war, only 9% of all world companies have left Russia. Among the rest are Nestle, Auchan, Leroy Merlin, Unilever and others.
