Recently, you could read in the media that a war could break out between NATO and Russia. The Estonian Ministry of Defense outlined the chances that this will happen.

The permanent secretary of the Estonian Military Ministry of Defense, Kusti Salm, shared his thoughts on this matter in an interview with Channel 24. The journalist recalled the words of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who stated that NATO could become the next target of an attack by an aggressor country.

Russia held back by the war in Ukraine

When talking about Russia's intentions, I think that now all strategic ambiguity has disappeared. Russia's intention is to impose its own will on most Eastern European nations, as they laid out in their late 2021 demands. Therefore, it is clear that if Russia had such an opportunity, it would not hesitate to use it,” Salm emphasized.

He noted that the war in Ukraine is stopping Russia. But if the enemy succeeds, then his “appetites will only increase.” According to him, the Russians will find an excuse for their defeat; they will interpret the behavior of the West as “the strongest and unattainable goal.” And, of course, “this will be an invitation to conflict.”

So, our only strategic option for Estonia, as for all others countries of Europe and NATO is to help Ukraine win the war, noted Kusti Salm.

He noted that it is necessary to destroy the prospect of a potential military conflict. According to him, the only way to do this is “first help Ukraine win.” This will allow us to destroy and drive the enemy from the territory of our country.

He also added that defensive fortification lines are being built in the country. About 600 concrete barriers will be built with Lithuania. They should work as a line of defense that our state has built on the eastern border.

This would make the conquest of Estonia much more expensive for Russia, and for them it would be necessary to gather more troops, he added in an interview.

According to him, Estonia takes its own defense seriously not only in press releases. This is also done in real actions.

Salm voiced the assumption that very clearly “we state that the territorial integrity of Estonia is the territorial integrity of NATO and the European Union “. He added that the country was convinced that “these are concrete steps on behalf of alliances.”

According to him, the country has four position Allied troops, “virtually three nuclear powers on Estonian soil.” He added that it had to be credible enough “to convey the message to Russia.”
