< p _ngcontent-sc86="" class="news-annotation">Diplomat Andriy Melnyk served as Ukraine's ambassador to Germany for 8 years. In October, he should return to Kyiv, according to the order of the President on his dismissal.
Andriy Melnyk became known for his clear criticism of German politicians. Now the AfD deputy group is submitting a proposal to the Bundestag to recognize him as an undesirable person in Germany.
What explains such actions
In the document, the German deputies write that they want to do this “against the background of his many insults and humiliation of the people, state bodies and politicians of the host country.” The group is demanding Melnik's “immediate recall” in time for his planned departure from Germany in October.
MPs say Melnik called Chancellor Olaf Scholz a “offended liverwurst” and accused Federal President Franco-Walter Steinmeier of creating a “web of contacts” with Russia”.
Mr. Melnik represented the interests of his country. We call on the federal government to defend the interests of Germany with the same passion, said the chairman of the AfD parliamentary group in the Foreign Affairs Committee, Piotr Bysron.
He emphasized that the statement was directed against the inaction of the German government, and not against Melnik as a person.
Statement does not imply consequences
The German deputies explain that the statement will not have any far-reaching consequences. It should be understood as a request to the Federal Foreign Office.
Prior to this, Jens Lehmann, CDU Bundestag deputy from Leipzig, made the same demand on social networks towards Melnik. Like, he needs to be declared persona non grata so that he can quickly leave Germany.
Melnyk himself, commenting on such a statement, wrote what he calls “real solidarity” with Ukraine at the height of Russia's barbaric war.
