The Czech Republic initiates a ban on grain imports to the EU from Russia and Belarus

At a meeting of the European Council, which will take place next week, the delegation from the Czech Republic will propose to its partners to introduce a ban on the import of grain into European countries from Russia and Belarus.

This was reported by the Novinky publication, citing a statement by the Czech Minister of Agriculture Marek Vyborny.

—We will insist that grains and oilseeds be on the list of sanctions and not enter Europe… There is no reason why we should support the aggressor by buying Russian grain in Europe, — indicated by the politician.

Import of Russian grain to the EU

According to Eurostat, last year Russia exported 1.5 million tons of grain to the European market, which exceeded the figures before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In particular, Spain imported many times more Russian grain than before, since the country had a bad harvest in 2023.

Vyborny added that EU members should not have concerns that the ban on grain from Russia and its satellite Belarus will affect the rise in food prices.

According to the minister, the Czech Republic has surpluses for export, and “there were surpluses all over the world”.
