Brief version of the news

  • China is trying to balance between Russia and the West in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • China is committed to Russia through trade and military support, but also seeks to maintain ties with Western countries.

Now the world is polarized and there is the issue of uncertainty, including in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, so China is trying to balance and supposedly take a neutral position. However, in fact, it stays closer to one of the sides.

If we take the context of geopolitics, then China gravitates more towards Russia, because it does help it with dual-use goods and provides military support. All these actions enable the Kremlin to continue its aggression. Candidate of Political Sciences, international affairs expert Stanislav Zhelikhovsky spoke about this on air 24 Channel.

At the same time, on the other hand, China does not seem to mind having economic benefits, and for this it is important for it to have close ties with the West, especially with the countries of the European Union. After all, he even had the “one belt, one road” initiative. It is very important for him to hold meetings and we see that he himself must visit the countries of the European Union in May,” noted Zhelikhovsky.

That is, he is still trying to find this balance. On the one hand, geopolitics, where Russia suits him, which is such a beneficial ally in the context of the confrontation with the United States. On the other hand, it is important for him to trade with Western partners. Here, first of all, the EU, although we see attempts to find a common language with the United States,” the international relations expert explained.

He added that for now China will not clearly choose sides, but , most likely, will observe how the Russian-Ukrainian war will end, what the situation in the world will be in the future, what Russia will be like after this war, in what state it will emerge or the Putin regime will remain. All this is also very important for China.

How events in the world will develop, and whether there will be an integral West, again depends on Russia – Ukrainian war. That is, in fact, now everything is based not on China, but on the situation that Russia unleashed,” Zhelikhovsky said.

According to him, China is still an important player on the international stage. Accordingly, everyone wants to win over his side, because he has enormous influence in many regions of the world. However, everything is being decided in Ukraine and the results of the war will indicate what the world order will be like in the post-war period when it comes.
