The children of imprisoned Iranian human rights activist Nargiz Mohammadi received an award on her behalf. Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023.

According to the foreign TV channel Euronews, 17-year-old twins Ali and Kiana read out a speech that Mohammadi managed to convey from prison. The award was presented in Oslo — capital of Norway.

Mohammadi's daughter said on behalf of the human rights activist that Iranian society needs global support, and journalists are critical allies in the fight against the destructive tyranny of the government of the Islamic Republic.

During the ceremony, Mohammadi announced a hunger strike in prison in solidarity with the Baha'i community — Iran's largest religious minority that faces discrimination.

What is known about Nargiz Mohammadi

51-year-old Nargis Mohammadi is an Iranian human rights activist and vice president of the Human Rights Defenders Center. It is also headed by former Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, who previously received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

About seven years ago, Mohammadi was sentenced in Tehran to 16 years in prison. She was accused of creating and leading a human rights movement that supports the abolition of the death penalty.
