The Kremlin is counting heavily on the unrecognized Transnistria. Russia is very beneficial from this bridgehead, which can be aimed both against Ukraine and against Moldova.

Now there are two forces operating in Transnistria. The director of the Institute for Effective Politics, Republic of Moldova, Vitaly Andrievsky, spoke about this 24 Channel.

“There are conditionally two forces fighting in Transnistria. Some who want peace. Many of them are ready to integrate into Moldova. Others are directly subordinate to the FSB, the Kremlin. It is beneficial for them that there is constant tension in this region, sentiments against Moldova and Ukraine,” he explained .

The group that operates with the FSB periodically organizes some kind of provocations to keep the community in suspense. It is very serious. It is possible that they may again be preparing certain actions.

Military contingent in Transnistria

Vitaly Andrievsky noted that there is different information about the size of the Russian military contingent in Transnistria. They talk about about 1,500 – 2,000 military personnel, sometimes they say more. In particular, this number includes the so-called Russian “peacekeepers”.

In addition, there are security forces in Transnistria that are also under the control of Russia. Most of them are citizens of the aggressor country.

There is a certain danger. But I don't think they want to fight. I think they are very relaxed here. “They wouldn’t want to return to Russia and then be sent to fight against Ukraine,” he said.

Ammunition depot in Transnistria

In the unrecognized Transnistria there is one of the largest ammunition depots in Eastern Europe. The director of the Institute for Effective Politics emphasized that ammunition was brought there from almost all of Europe, where the Soviet army was located. It is unknown how many shells that are there are now in combat condition.

I think Ukraine would like to have this ammunition. But if the leadership of Moldova now agrees to enter and take away these ammunition, I do not rule out that Russia will launch a missile strike on Moldova, Andrievsky suggested.

According to him, it is possible Moldova will be able to gradually come to an agreement with Transnistria and take control of this territory. Then the problem will be solved, in particular with this ammunition depot. Then a positive decision regarding Ukraine can be made. However, as long as this ammunition depot exists there, Russia will make every effort to prevent Transnistria from integrating into Moldova.
